"Janet Hurley worked in my classroom for at least ten hours every week for three months. My students participated willingly in every part of Janet's curriculum which focused on how writing can make a difference in the world. The children in my fifth grade class ate it all up. Partly they were eager for this real world talk and partly they were drawn in by her skills as a teacher.
The children felt her investment in them and her investment of time inspired them to write phenomenal, thought-full essays." May Castelloe, Teacher, Isaac Dickson Elementary, Asheville |
Before Janet Hurley began her work with True Ink, there was no community-based programming designed to strengthen and foster a love of writing in children. My own son and many of my students have participated in her writing camps and workshops. She has organized local writers and artists to share their expertise with young authors. I am always amazed at how Janet is able to help all students see themselves as writers.

Janet has worked with students at Dickson for many years doing Writing to Change the World with our 5th graders. Her work has had a very positive outcome on both the writing skills and disposition toward writing of students. She has worked with kids to show them the power of words and has demonstrated this to them through publication, blogging, and other forms of media. This is a powerful tool. A writer herself, she can assist kids in the craft of writing as well as understanding the importance of written expression. I have been impressed by the quality of work students have turned out under her guidance.

Tamiko and Janet, Thank you both so much for your immense help to prepare our kids for the Slam (and other poetic endeavors) this past weekend. I know they both had a great time and have been seen writing tons since then. I am grateflul for your help and looking forward to the collaborative efforts that will arise out of the hours put into the classrooms. Thanks so much!
